Pregnancy

Osteopaths may help to prevent and manage a variety of pre- and post-natal conditions within the neuro-musculoskeletal system (nerves, muscles and bones).  Some of the most common complaints associated with pregnancy are:  low back pain, pelvic pain, pubic symphysis problems, pelvic instability, neck pain, headaches, migraines, shoulder & mid back pain.

As your body undergoes a variety of changes, including the expansion of the abdominal region, the body’s centre of gravity to shift forward, causing strain on the lumbar spine and pelvis. Hormonal changes that prepare the body for delivery causes softening of the muscles & supporting ligaments. This can also cause lower back and pelvic pain and associated pain that travels down the legs, sciatica.

You may also choose to see your osteopath after birth as some women experience postural problems and/or constant back pain which maybe due to the different physical activities of bending over cots, feeding positions, carrying the baby as well as ligaments and muscle strength may still be weak.

The careful work of Osteopaths in treating women pre- and post-natal ensures their bodies' ability to cope with these changes, and support the growth of their baby while minimising any discomfort or pain.
